68Cost Of Illegal Immigration
Trying To Kill E-Verify
Its the time of the year when our government checks out of the office for a three-week vacation! Adjourned until September, they are taking their health care agendas, pro or con, back home to constituents. However, the one thing they refuse to discuss, or take action on, is Immigration Enforcement! A subject right up there with health care reform.
I will however give them credit; they are now calling it Reform instead of Amnesty. Although, I have heard nasty rumors that some are still trying to push Amnesty through on the sly as an amendment to other bills. Bills, which lack reference to the illegal immigration problem. WOW, are we surprised by this?
Before the Senates conclusion for its summer break, some members of Congress put forth a few impressive amendments for immigration enforcement. Here is a brief summary:
1. E-Verify Amendment #1371-Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL)
If passed, the amendment will make E-Verify a permanent tool. E-Verify is presently operational but is set to expire on September 30, 2009.
This amendment will prevent those supporting mass amnesty from using it as justification to pass an amnesty bill in support of roughly 12 million illegal aliens. It will also assure that all good-faith employers, including the federal government, will have access to this tool. E-Verify will be used to verify legal status for existing employees and future new hires. Especially those associated with all federal government contracts.

2. Border Fence Amendment #1399-Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC)
This amendment directs the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to finish almost 700 miles of doubled reinforced fencing along our southwestern border by the end of 2010. Congress spelled this out in the “Secure Fence Act of 2006”. To date DHS has completed only 32 miles of fence. Its completion is expected to prevent continual border crossings by foot and motor vehicle.
3. No Match Amendment #1375-Senator David Vitter (R-LA)
Homeland Security’s funding for FY 2010 is forbidden to use money to rescind a DHS final decree pertaining to employees whose names, do not match their Social Security number. When this occurs, employers are directed to take action since most unmatched SSN’s are illegal aliens. The amendment will free jobs held by illegal aliens and provide immigration enforcement the tools they need to address the no match problem.
4. E-Verify Amendment #1415-Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA)
This provides employers enrolled in E-Verify an option to use the program to check the work authorization status of existing employees and new hires. Right now E-Verify is only used for verifying new hires. With unemployment at a 25 year high, this amendment will act as a stimulus plan for unemployed Americans. When an employer comes across an illegal alien on his or her payroll, that employer can free up the job for an American worker.
The change in our Senate’s view on Immigration is good news. In my opinion, Enforcement is a much better choice of words and deed then Amnesty---especially, for those who believe that our Immigration Laws should not be violated.

Ginn, thanks for visiting this hub and taking time to comment. I personally am a descendent of immigrants who came here LEGALLY. All immigrants need to honor the immigration laws of the country they intend to enter. Every country has them --- including Mexico.
Another big issue, which affects us as a country, is the Anchor Baby draw see---OUR-GOVERNMENT-HOLDING-BACK-HR-1868.
You’re right concerning the northern borders. Unfortunately, the USA will be forced to build fences across its northern borders too. Why, because 20+ years ago, when the government granted Amnesty, they sent out a huge message, which, we are paying for, today…
In my opinion, with our distressed economy and unemployment numbers, immigration from all areas should be discontinued; at least until the country is back to a prosperous level in all areas.

Interesting Hub. In South Africa we also have quite a problem with so-called illegal aliens. I have a different view of this issue - I think international borders are in any case nonsense and should become more porous - we don't need them. They only cause more division and strife.
Building fences and walls also is a costly and an ultimately futile exercise. All such walls will eventually come down like the one in Berlin did in 1989. The money should rather be spent on uplifting people's lives. How many schools could be built, teachers paid, babies fed, with the billions spent on walls, fences, border patrols and the like? And that sort of spending would really improve people's lives.
The fact that people "illegally" cross borders all over the world shows that the borders in any case are meaningless, except as a source of irritation, to the ordinary people.
But then I guess I'm in a minority, an eccentric, loony minority. But that's what I like!

Each countries immigration laws are intended to protect jobs, wages, education, standard of living, etc. Immigration laws were also designed to maintain balance within the country and guard against an influx of criminal elements. Unfortunately, due to the lack of government enforcement, illegal immigration has created an immense criminal, financial and economical burden on the United States…

If it is that easy to get through our borders (with no legitimacy) then we are no longer safe. That stance sends a loud and clear message to the rest of the world.

This is an interesting Article. We have the same issue in the UK. Thousands of people live here illegally and actually, I feel for them, cos some have just come to live a better life or maybe make money and return to their families.
I watched a TV program months ago on people complaining that their kids could not get into the schools they had chosen. It wasn't mentioned in the program, but I knew this was because of so many foreigners in the country and I thought it's only a matter of time before people start getting bitter about not having enough jobs.
Well, sometime later, a working place did a serious protest about only hiring British to work on some building construction site. It made Headlines. So, immigration is taking a Toll. It's a serious issue.

Lady_E thanks for your comment and visit...Illegal immigration is a serious problem; one that sends a wrong message concerning our immigration laws...Instead of treating illegally entry as the class 4 felony that it is, our government looks the other way. They continue to ignore the harm it is doing to our country and its citizens. I hope the current amnesty bill, which has been introduced, will fail. Our government needs to enforce the immigration laws that are in affect today! This would be a huge step in the right direction…

A rose by any other name is still a rose and an Amnesty by any other name is still an Amnesty. Senator Reid is poised to tack the Dream Act Amnesty to a bill authorizing money to provide supplies to our soldiers.
No Amnesty, I agree with you 100%!!! Our self serving elected officials deceive us all the time by attaching bills like Amnesty to bills which have absolutely NO relevance? Why do people keep rewarding this deceptive conduct with their votes? Until the voting public wakes up nothing will change for this country!
Here are my thoughts, VOTE ALL INCUMBENTS OUT! Demand term limits for all elected officials and hold elections every two years. Another issue, the Supreme Court Justices should not have a lifetime appointment; that also needs to be a term limit position with the citizens voting on reappointment/or not every two years.
Career politicians have ruined this country with their greed and the Supreme Court is dismantling our constitution…WAKE UP AMERICA!

Nancy thanks for this read. In my book--if you are illegally here then you have committed a crime and the law should be enforced no matter who you are.
We talk about the fence on our southern borders that will never be completed or will it stop those that cross it---yet we never hear about the northern borders that are wide open for others?
