THE CDC/WHO HAS CONFIRMED 177,457 CASES OF SWINE FLU RESULTING IN 1,462 DEATHS WORLD WIDE/UPDATED 8-20-09

THE FLIP SIDE OF THE SWINE FLU VIRUS

If you thought Swine Flu was behind you---think again! It is alive and well. The most recent report from the CDC recorded 9,830 cases of people sickened by this flu strain and 79 deaths with most cases in Mexico. The United States has at least 5,469 cases of Swine Flu and 7 deaths linked to it. A 44-year-old man died Tuesday in St. Louis, Missouri. His name was not released but it was reported that he had visited Mexico.

The flu originated in Mexico killing dozens of people and causing deep concern for U S officials. So far, this flu strain reacts similar to the typical flu, which has been treated successfully in most cases. However, those at risk are the very young, elderly and those with pre-existing health issues. A word to all travelers, stay out of Mexico until this flu strain has been eliminated. In the last 24 hours, 1,000 new cases have been reported.

My question---why is our government refusing to step up and act responsibility by CLOSING DOWN OUR BORDERS! They should be eliminating all travel into and out of the United States for the protection of all citizens. I read that the U S Embassy in Mexico banned entry from America. How ironic is that? The least our government could do is supply everyone, including clinics and hospitals, with N-95 biohazard protective masks.

Is anyone besides me keeping track of those who are willing putting us at risk? You should be and if their name appears on your ballot next election---VOTE THEM OUT OF OFFICE! I’m sure you have read enough on this subject to know the symptoms but if not, here they are:

  • Fever, sore throat, body aches, cough, chills, headache, fatigue and possibly diarrhea and vomiting.

Try to avoid crowds as much as possible and if you are sick, stay home! If you have children and they display any of the symptoms, keep them home from school. Studies have shown that people may be contagious one day prior to the onset of symptoms and up to 7 days after they get sick. Children can be contagious for a longer period. Stay informed and learn how to take care of someone that is ill.

Don't hold your breath---waiting for the government to step-up, they have never acted on any issue fast yet, also the average person who is sick, doesn't really care about spreading it---just what he/she wants at that moment.

Ginn, your right on both counts! Our government always acts slowly on important issues when it comes to its Citizens. The spread of this flu would have been lessened with our borders closed in all areas until it was resolved. Another aspect of prevention would be for people who have flu symptoms to stay home until they feel better. Simple resolves pushed aside in lieu of self-indulgent whims...

Thanks for stopping by and expressing your views.

Nancy, if bubonic plague broke out, they wouldn't close the borders. In the new global world, everybody's running in and out of every country, and business is business. Let's just hope and pray the swine flu doesn't increase in severity this fall and winter, as flu usually does.

Delores thanks for your comment and yes, I agree with you. Since our government lacks the moral values to do what is right---it will be business as usual. After all, doing the right thing is not always the popular thing to do. Especially, when all you care about is your political career and all the money you realize from being in that position.

Like you suggested it's better to take precautions. I always do. I am surprised they have not yet created a compulsion that passengers on board airlines should wear surgical masks.

Thanks for your comment Quicksand...I agree with you that airline traveler's need to take "extreme" precautions. Personal responsibility comes into play here too. Do not travel when sick or, if you are inclined to do so, wear a mask!

I always worry mostly about my elderly relatives. Luckily, they stay at home almost all of the time anyway, so hopefully their risk of exposure is very, very low.

Mulberry1, my worries are the elderly and the younger individuals...Seems this flu is worse for them; strange...Usually, the elderly are the most susceptible to flu bugs, etc.
